True...but it leads back to the chicken and egg question. It takes a passionate base to start the movement and push it into the mainstream. Passionate bases pretty much require the sense that they are special.
That being said, I was undoubtedly at my most fittest in recent years when my easiest and most convenient commute to work was by bike. But if it hadn't been easy/convenient, I wouldn't have vern doing it - the same situation described by the author from his time in Amsterdam.
